The Republican Tax Law and Health Care Cuts
The Republican Tax Law, passed by Congress in 2025 with support from Rep. Jen Kiggans, delivers massive tax breaks to the wealthy by slashing hundreds of billions of dollars from programs like Medicaid, taking health care away from working families.
Here are the facts:
The Republican Tax Law includes the largest cuts to Medicaid in history to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Medicaid provides health coverage to over 1.5 million Virginians.
These cuts will rip care away from over 260,000 Virginians across the Commonwealth and put hospitals and nursing homes at risk of closure, leaving Virginians hours away from or without access to critical care.
In VA-02, it jeopardizes care for rural families in Franklin, where residents could lose Southampton Medical Center, the only emergency care within 36 miles.
The massive cuts to health care will also drive up the number of uninsured Americans in every state and congressional district in the country, including 28,000 in VA-02.
The law prioritizes tax breaks for the wealthy over working families. The largest benefits flow to the top 1% and corporate interests, while low-income families actually lose money overall.
