Affordable Virginia Celebrates Nurse Appreciation Week

Virginia Beach, VA – For National Nurses Week, Affordable Virginia spent yesterday morning celebrating the work nurses put in for our veterans at the Hampton VA Medical Center. Hampton Roads has one of the largest veteran populations in the country, and over 50,000 veterans are served annually at this facility alone.

“As a retired nurse, I’ve seen both sides of the coin. I know the importance of having the resources you need to provide care, and I know the hoops retirees often have to jump through to access care,” said Linda Bennington, retired nurse in Chesapeake. “Nurses are often overlooked for the impact they have in their clinics and hospitals, but they are the bridge that gets every patient the care they need. I’m grateful I was able to serve my patients, and grateful for the community of nurses who continue to provide care and a kind ear to those who need it. As Congress considers cuts to critical programs, I hope they remember the people behind the numbers: patients here in Hampton Roads who depend on these services to stay healthy, and the nurses who rely on that funding to provide the best care possible.”

“Nurses are the backbone of every healthcare center, from urgent care to the OR – without them, we would not receive the care we need, when we need it,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaigns Director. “We know that right now things feel precarious for our veterans and their care teams, and while we can’t offer them the security they deserve, we would like to make their day a bit easier and make sure they know that our community appreciates the work they do.”
