ICYMI: Rep. Jen Kiggans Constituent Hit With Soaring Health Care Costs Attends State of the Union
Washington, DC – At last night’s State of the Union address, Virginia Beach resident Becky attended as Representative Judy Chu’s guest. Becky relies on her Affordable Care Act (ACA) plan to access health care. When the ACA tax credits were not restored, she was among 21,000 of Rep. Jen Kiggan’s constituents who now face skyrocketing premiums, some double what they were paying before.
Despite constituents urging her to extend the ACA tax credits, Rep. Jen Kiggans voted against the only viable option to restore them, leaving 326,000 Virginians to face skyrocketing premiums. Rep. Kiggans has a long history of opposing the ACA, including advocating its complete repeal.
“I was grateful for the opportunity to attend this year’s State of the Union address, and to accompany a strong advocate for working families, especially when it comes to health care,” said Becky, Virginia Beach resident. “Life happens, and we don’t get a choice in how our health will be impacted, and no one should have to decide between taking a loved one to the doctor, keeping the lights on, or putting food on the table. I wish I had a representative in Congress who stood up for working families, but Rep. Kiggans has continued to bow to this administration and prioritize tax cuts for billionaires over my health and every family struggling to afford necessities. I’m calling on Rep. Kiggans to restore the health care tax credits and bring down costs.”
Rep. Jen Kiggans repeated President Trump’s health care talking points last night, but the reality is she voted for the Republican Tax Law which slashed Medicaid for 260,000 Virginians and failed to extend the health care tax credits people like Becky depend on to afford their premiums. Ahead of the State of the Union, in an interview to 13News Now, Becky said no one should have to choose between getting care and paying their bills. Rep. Kiggans’ vote is doing exactly that by taking coverage away and making health care more expensive across the Commonwealth, which is why her constituents are calling on her to restore the health care tax credits and lower costs.
