One Year After Republican Tax Law, Constituents Rally in Suffolk Calling on Rep. Kiggans to Reverse Medicaid and SNAP Cuts

Suffolk, VA –  Today, advocates, constituents, and impacted individuals held a rally outside of Rep. Kiggans Suffolk office calling on her to reverse the dangerous Medicaid and SNAP cuts she voted for in the Republican Tax Law a year ago.

In addition, the Trump Administration just released new Medicaid guidance that will lead to more sick people losing their coverage. The rule is likely to worsen the impacts of this law on communities and lead to even sharper losses in health coverage for Virginians.

“I work with people every day who are living with sickle cell disease and other chronic health conditions. They already face huge barriers to getting the care they need,” said Diane, Virginia Beach resident. “These new Medicaid requirements are only going to make those barriers even higher, putting people with serious illnesses like sickle cell disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and other complex conditions at greater risk of losing the health coverage they depend on to stay alive and healthy. The rollout of this law just keeps getting worse! I am calling on Rep. Kiggans to reverse these horrible health care cuts.”

The law delivered massive tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations while making the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in history, increasing health care and food costs for families. The law slashed health care for 260,000 Virginians who rely on it and put 78,000 Virginians at risk of losing their food assistance benefits.

“It's been one year since Rep. Jen Kiggans voted for this dangerous law, and families across Hampton Roads are paying the price,” said Emily Yeatts, Campaign Director for Affordable Virginia. “Every day, we hear from parents, veterans, seniors, and working families who are struggling with higher costs and the fear of losing the health care and food assistance they depend on. Rep. Kiggans continues to defend this egregious law. We will continue to hold Rep. Kiggans accountable and keep the pressure on until these devastating cuts are reversed and Virginia families get the support they deserve.”
