Constituents Urge Rep. Kiggans to Reject Farm Bill That Fails to Address SNAP Cuts

Virginia Beach, VA – This week, the House of Representatives is expected to take up a vote on the Farm Bill. The current Farm Bill proposal does nothing to address the growing food insecurity crisis created by the $186.5 billion in SNAP cuts included in the Republican Tax Law that Rep. Jen Kiggans voted for last summer.

“I volunteer at a local food bank in Chesapeake, and I’ve seen firsthand how much the need has grown, especially among young families and seniors here in Hampton Roads,” said Patricia. “I don’t get why Rep. Jen Kiggans wouldn’t do everything she can to address that. She should be taking every opportunity to help working families in her district, not ignoring reality and trying to convince us that prices are down. I am calling on Rep. Jen Kiggans to reverse her cuts to SNAP and reject this Farm Bill.”

The Republican Tax Law was the biggest hit to SNAP in the history of the program to pay for bigger tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, putting 78,000 Virginians at risk of losing their food assistance benefits. SNAP supports over 800,000 people in Virginia and 33,000 veterans. New reporting shows that SNAP participation has declined dramatically since the law's enactment, with participation down over 13% in Virginia.
