Hampton Roads Families Pay the Price as Rep. Kiggans Votes to Continue Iran Conflict
Virginia Beach, VA – Today, Rep. Jen Kiggans voted against a resolution that would require congressional approval for further military action in Iran, continuing to green light a conflict that is driving up gas prices and costs for working families here in Hampton Roads.
“Families in Hampton Roads are already struggling to keep up with the rising cost of groceries, gas, and everyday essentials, and Rep. Kiggans continues to support policies that are making things even worse,” said Emily Yeatts, Campaign Director for Affordable Virginia. “No family should have to wonder where their next meal is coming from or how they’re going to afford basic necessities because of what is going on in Washington. Rep. Kiggans needs to stop green lighting policies that drive up costs. Her priority should be making life more affordable for her constituents. ”
Virginians are paying the price for the conflict through higher costs on groceries, gas, shipping, and other everyday essentials. Since the start of the conflict in Iran, gas prices have surged nearly 50%, nearing $4.50 a gallon in Hampton Roads. Grocery prices surged higher in the month of April more than any month in the last four years. The rise in prices is mostly driven by a major oil shock caused by the war with Iran, which has pushed diesel prices higher.
