Heartbroken Health Care Advocates Deliver Valentine’s Day Plea to Rep. Kiggans to Stop Health Care Cuts

Rep. Kiggans has taken a vote that has made health care more expensive for over 21,000 of her constituents.

Virginia Beach, VA – Heartbroken health care advocates joined Affordable Virginia to deliver over 70 valentines from constituents to Rep. Jen Kiggans’ office with a clear message: “Stop the health care cuts and stand up for affordable health care”.

Rep. Kiggans has taken vote after vote that will make health care more expensive for Virginia families, including slashing Medicaid and voting against extending critical health care tax credits that helped keep health coverage affordable for over 21,000 of her constituents.

“My family relies on Medicaid for essential health care. My son would not be able to access his very expensive braces for cerebral palsy without it, and yet, Rep. Jen Kiggans was proud to cut a program that so many families need,” said Bernita, resident of Virginia Beach. “Over 260,000 Virginians rely on Medicaid, and Rep. Kiggans put tax breaks for billionaires over access to health care for working families. Rep. Kiggans, we aren’t too proud to beg, and we are begging you to show up for us and stop cutting health care.”

Bernita’s story as the primary caretaker of her son, who has cerebral palsy and relies on Medicaid for treatment is featured in a new ad. Bernita calls on Rep. Jen Kiggans to stop giving tax cuts to billionaires and to stand up for her constituents who could lose their health care and are fighting for their lives.

“Too many people I know have told me that they can’t afford their health insurance. They can’t go to the doctor because they haven’t paid or can’t afford to pay their deductible. This isn’t sustainable,” said Lori, resident of Virginia Beach. “Families across Hampton Roads are already suffering, and care is already becoming less accessible, especially in Franklin City, where Southampton Medical Center is at risk of closing. These health care cuts are unacceptable, and Rep. Kiggans owes it to her constituents to put them first, and stop cutting their care to pay for another tax cut for billionaires.”

This past year, Rep. Kiggans has:

  • Voted to slash health care for 260,000 Medicaid recipients in Virginia. These cuts will also threaten health care jobs and close rural hospitals here in the Commonwealth.

  • Voted against restoring health care tax credits, impacting 326,000 Virginians who are currently facing steep premium hikes due to the expiration of the credits in 2025.
