Rep. Jen Kiggans Doubles Down on Slashing Medicaid and SNAP For Working Virginians, Constituents Urge Her to Reverse Course

Virginia Beach, VA – Today, Rep. Jen Kiggans voted for a resolution to express support for last year’s Republican Tax Law, doubling down on her historic cuts to Medicaid and SNAP that will rip health care and food assistance away from thousands of Virginians to pay for billionaire tax breaks.

“I saw Rep. Jen Kiggans said she was proud to vote for this Republican Tax Law, and honestly, that really stuck with me. I’m a young mom just trying to keep food on the table, and I rely on SNAP to make sure my family gets through the week,” said Kee. “With prices already going up on groceries and everything else, I don’t know how we’re supposed to handle cuts on top of that. It feels like people like me are being completely overlooked, and it’s scary not knowing what comes next as I try to do what's best for my daughter.”

When Rep. Jen Kiggans voted for the Republican Tax Law, she slashed Medicaid for 260,000 Virginians who rely on it. These cuts will rip health care away from those who need it, threaten health care jobs, and close rural hospitals here in the Commonwealth. Additionally, the law puts 78,000 Virginians at risk of losing some of their food assistance benefits. New reporting shows that SNAP participation has declined dramatically since the law's enactment, with participation down over 11% in Virginia. The law prioritizes tax breaks for the wealthy, as the largest benefits flow to the top 1% and corporate interests, while low-income families actually lose money.

Affordable Virginia is calling on Rep. Jen Kiggans to reverse course and stop voting to slash Medicaid and SNAP.
