Rep. Kiggans Stays Silent while Working Families Continue to Bear the Brunt of Trump’s New Tariffs
A New Study Shows US Tariffs Are Paid Almost Entirely By Americans
Virginia Beach, VA – In the last year, as this Administration has issued, rescinded, and reissued tariffs, working families and small businesses have borne the brunt of the impact, and it's affecting their bottom lines. Despite what the Administration has said, a new study found that the brunt of US tariffs – a staggering 96% – are being paid by US consumers. Rep. Kiggans has asked her constituents to be patient with the process, while Virginia small businesses pay billions and families paid an additional $1,700 last year due to these tariffs.
Ahead of the last government shutdown, Congressional Republicans once again voted to block any tariff vote through January 31st. With the deadline quickly approaching, Republican House leadership is now looking to extend the ban on tariff votes. Rep. Kiggans has repeatedly voted to allow this Administration unilateral control over tariffs, even as they drive up costs for families in her district.
“Rep. Kiggans apparently hasn’t heard her constituents' concerns about rising costs. Whether it’s health care, groceries, gifts, or energy costs – working families are the only ones who aren’t getting a break,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaigns Director. “How much farther will working families have to stretch their budgets before Rep. Kiggans does anything to help them? She has repeatedly voted in support of these tariffs while billionaires get tax cuts and working families continue pinching pennies. Rep. Kiggans, your constituents are relying on you to do the right thing, stop cutting programs, and start cutting costs.”
