Rep. Kiggans Votes No on Health Care Tax Credits, Leaving Virginia Families Behind

Virginia Beach, VA – Today, Rep. Jen Kiggans voted no on restoring critical health care tax credits for three years. Rep. Jen Kiggans has repeatedly voted for a plan that did not include extending the ACA tax credits, driving up health care costs for her own constituents while offering only short-term half-measures that fail to provide real stability for families. She says these tax credits should be phased out, leaving Virginia families to pay the price with higher premiums and fewer options for care.

Despite her constituents urging her to support the 3-year extension, Rep. Kiggans has not budged. This comes after Rep. Kiggans voted to slash Medicaid for 260,000 Virginians earlier this year, exacerbating the health care affordability crisis. Over 326,000 Virginia families are currently facing steep premium hikes due to the expiration of tax credits at the end of 2025.

“I am disappointed that Rep. Kiggans didn’t support this bill, it’s a huge slap in the face to working families who are struggling with rising costs of everything, and these tax credits are a small help that makes a world of difference for families.” Chantelle Paxton, Virginia Beach resident and ACA recipient. “Many families in Hampton Roads depend on these tax credits. I depended on them when I had my baby. It’s time for Rep. Kiggans to stop playing politics with our health care.”

“Once again, Rep. Kiggans had the opportunity to stand up for her constituents, and she chose not to,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaigns Director. “Her refusal to support the only viable option to renew these health care tax credits is just another example of her prioritizing billionaires’ profits over making a tangible difference in the lives of her constituents. Premiums are skyrocketing, and Rep. Kiggans needs to take a stand against this administration and fight for her constituents!
