Gas Prices Surge Past $4 as Constituents Express Frustration With Rep. Jen Kiggans for Raising Costs
Chesapeake, VA – With gas prices in Hampton Roads surging to over $4.00 a gallon as the war with Iran continues, Affordable Virginia drew attention to the issue by handing out gas cards to customers at a Chesapeake gas station and food bank.
Experts say the war in Iran is driving up prices at the pump. Customers expressed their frustration with Rep. Jen Kiggans’ misaligned priorities as she continues to vote to raise costs on families while adamantly supporting the billion-dollar-a-day war in Iran.
“It feels like it’s one thing after another with Rep. Jen Kiggans and somehow it’s never about helping people like me. My grocery bill is up, my rent is up, and now I’m standing here at the gas station wondering where my break is,” said Lori, Virginia Beach resident. “It’s certainly not here. I can’t even find gas under $4.00 a gallon. Her priorities are completely out of touch with what working families are actually going through. I wish she would fight to lower costs instead of supporting costly wars. Her priorities are totally wrong.”
“Rep. Jen Kiggans has made it all too clear that she’s not just willing, but proud to support cuts to health care and food assistance that her own constituents rely on to get by, all while backing policies that continue to drive up everyday costs,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaign Director. “Working families are being squeezed from every direction, and instead of fighting for relief, she’s making it worse. Rep. Kiggans, it’s time to focus on your own district and actually work to lower costs for the people you represent.”
These increased gas prices come at a time when Virginians are already dealing with increasing costs on almost everything else. Rep. Jen Kiggans has voted to raise the cost of healthcare with her vote to slash Medicaid, the cost of energy with her vote to not extend energy tax credits, and the cost of groceries as she has repeatedly voted to allow cost-raising tariffs. Additionally, new reporting reveals that Republicans in Congress are weighing additional cuts to federal health care programs as part of an effort to fund a massive new military spending package tied to the ongoing war in Iran.
