Rep. Jen Kiggans: Virginians Can’t Afford Another Bad Vote

Virginia Beach, VA – Legislation is up in the House this week that could result in deep cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, and other important programs working families rely on.

“Rep. Kiggans has her priorities backwards. She had no problem blowing up the deficit to give massive tax breaks to the billionaires when she voted for the Republican Tax Law. Again, she is threatening programs that working families, seniors, and veterans rely on,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaign Director. “Under this amendment, we could see even bigger cuts to programs like Medicaid. We’ve been talking to families across Hampton Roads and sharing the stories of people who rely on Medicaid just to get by. Further threatening that support is just cruel. We are calling on Rep. Kiggans to oppose this amendment and stop threatening the health care of her constituents.”

This potential vote could follow Rep. Kiggans’ recent pattern of voting to slash essential programs families in her district rely on. When Rep. Kiggans voted for the Republican Tax Law last year, she voted to slash Medicaid for 260,000 Virginians, kill health care jobs and close rural hospitals here in the Commonwealth.

This vote could further threaten financial security for veterans, as 1 in 10 veterans rely on Medicaid. The amendment additionally threatens other services veterans rely on, such as Medicare and Social Security. 1 in 3 Virginia veterans receives Social Security.
