Rep. Jen Kiggans’ Vote Leaves Virginia Families Paying More to Stay Warm
The average Virginia household is expected to pay at least $110 more in energy bills this year due to the Republican Tax Law.
Virginia Beach, VA – As Virginians recover from this winter’s largest storm and prepare for another, families are facing rising energy costs during some of the coldest temperatures in recent years. Staying warm will take more than putting on another sweater. The average Virginia household is expected to pay at least $110 more in energy bills this year due to Rep. Kiggans’ support of the Republican Tax Law, which eliminates a range of clean energy tax credits.
In Hampton Roads, eliminating federal clean energy tax credits puts both jobs and major investments at risk. These credits have helped support offshore wind projects expected to generate thousands of port jobs. This has added additional uncertainty to existing projects like Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, which has been put in limbo.
“We made sure to stock up for the storm, and now there’s another one coming. People can barely afford to keep our everyday lives stocked, and now they have to worry about energy costs soaring,” said Bill Robinson, Isle of Wight resident. “My energy bill this month has been so high, and now I’m hearing about data centers driving prices up, and that offshore wind project being stopped and restarted. We just want lower energy bills. Rep. Jen Kiggans needs to be focused on whatever will make my energy costs go down, not giving tax breaks to billionaires.”
“After voting for the Republican Tax Law, Rep. Jen Kiggans is now attempting to save face by asking the Administration to resume projects her district desperately needs for jobs and lower energy costs. It wasn’t a secret that this bill would cut important infrastructure funding for Virginians, but Rep. Kiggans voted for it anyway,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaigns Director. “If it wasn’t for her vote to prioritize tax cuts for billionaires over her constituents, we wouldn’t be caught in this mess. Rep. Kiggans needs to start standing up for Virginia families and work to lower energy costs.”
